Time to Rodeo

Posted in past time by ohiorat on January 12, 2007
The search for Rodeo in our very own wikipedia gave links to a cowboy sport.(Further query into wiki will give many other interesting results like Rodeo Drive, Renault Rodeo and many others.) Then it registered to me that I was partially correct about the meaning of Rodeo. I had thought that it was just another synonym for Cowboy. Somewhere I missed the sport part. I had also played Rodeo (of a different kind though). This was less adventurous but still it was interesting. I am referring to the game Cows and Bulls.

Numbers always were my best friends. I like playing with them. How to make a 1000 using some 8 eights? How to make 100 using all the numbers from 0 to 9? I always tried doing things like this. Then came across the game cows and bulls (it is a word game). I tried to make the number version of this work. But problem with that was that there was no one to guess a number. I am not Geri and this game isn’t chess. So the best way to play was against a person who will always guess the number and tell me the no of cows and bulls. With the lots of help from a geek friend I was able to do that. He simply wrote me a program and the game was there. He told me the programming techniques he used and why he used them to design and develop the game but I never listened (I never thanked him then.). I just wanted to play the game.

While listening to the boring lectures in classrooms we had many options to select from. (I am listing only a few. Others were also there. But I hardly ventured into them)
a) To listen to the lecture and ask meaningful doubts (tried hard. Nothing meaningful came to my mind other than these “What am I doing here?” When will the class end?”, “What will happen to me?”).
b) To sleep in the class.(can’t stand the humiliation of being abused by the lecturer that too when I am yawning)
c) Be a man and go back to the hostel and sleep.(Wish I could but again I have my done my part of bunking)
d) To play Cows and Bulls. (The safest option of the lot. Just that you have to do it with a lot of skill.)

No crime is perfect without a partner. I had the best of the lot. We used to sit in the second last row. Each used to roll his words out. Finally we reach the inevitable. We run out of words but our enthusiasm never drained. God was very kind to us. Every time we come to a situation where we are stuck he does give us an easier way out. One such help from God ended up in the end of the morning session. Going back to hostel there were too many thoughts gulfing my small brain. Will I be able to finish the lab assignment? Will India win the match? (I wasn’t able to finish the lab assignment. India surprisingly won. )

Thanks to one of the clubs in my institute we had change to play the favorite game of classroom outside classroom. My partner wanted to play. (He is one guy who never gives up without putting a fight.) So I obliged. Suddenly life had a new meaning. I was back in my room hunting for four lettered words which was hard to figure out and playing with my partner most of those words. We were sure that we will win at least a few rounds. But somebody had a different ending in mind. We lost in the first round itself. The word we didn’t guess was “jamb”. But we were allowed to register again. That was it. My partner was playing like a machine. We missed only two words in the whole tournament. The second one was “axis”.

A year nearly passed. It was time for C&B 2nd edition. I did enroll with a different partner. He was too good (My choices are always good). We lost only in finals that too to my old partner. It wasn’t strategy or anything. But we made up for the second registration last time around. The funny part with the second time is that we played with the opponents minds. Sometimes we could spell the word in the second or third guess. Guess all the credit goes to my partners who decided to make me a part of their moment of success. I wish there was one more C & B game where they partner each other. It will be tough to beat that team. As for me I am just going with it.

For the Love of Anagrams

Posted in past time by ohiorat on January 11, 2007
Never did it come to me, even once, that some thing like anagrams could arouse interest in me. If u had asked me what anagrams are some 7 years back you could always expect a smile from me. That smile wasn’t a friendly one. It is some thing I used to cover up my ignorance of things which I thought doesn’t impress me. I still have that smile with me and I still use it conveniently at many a places.

It all goes back to the first year at my reputed college. (My contribution to the institute would come to null. And I still the blame the college for that.) There used to be these aptitude tests conducted by the various clubs of our college. My initial impression about them wasn’t too good. In fact I then thought that it was a waste of time. You can’t blame me for that because that was how my mindset was. (Hey I break paragraphs when I feel that I am diverting from what I really want to say. Kindly excuse me.)

It all started one day. I was there in one of the rooms in the DB waiting for the question paper of one such exam. I could attribute my going there to the new set of friends I made up there in the course of a year. They all used to think that these things are very good. And so since I want to stay with them and my other friends were too busy with their own activities I decided to go. Math never a troubled me. But then I came upon some new things over there. Some were called Rebuses. Some were called Anagrams. And then there were the good old puzzles and riddles which I used to do whenever I come across them. Rebuses clicked with me then and there. Success will give u a new mode of perception. I liked things when they came with a cup of success.

Then there was Anagrams. I could get myself to get at least one correct even when I spend a good 5 to 10 minutes pondering on the various options. But then there were lot many things to attribute to my failure.

1) Lack of patience in doing things when they are going my way.
2) Total unawareness of important personalities.
3) Complete ignorance of Celebrity names.
4) Not having the “Yo” factor (This could be removed from the list. Because later I came to know that I was wrong that time and here I am admitting it )

But then it was then and I didn’t fare any better for many a times with them. All I could do was to try not to forget them so that I could get them the next time. I did forget them. I didn’t know that my memory would fail me. I had a great belief in my skills till then. Not now. I smilingly attribute it to me getting older. And you are bound to forget things when you are getting older.

Anagrams or “ars magna” really is Great Work. I later tried to make anagrams of my own. Then I got the funny side of it. Initially I failed in making any thing significant leave alone at least some meaningful blocks. But later I was able to make them. Dan Brown used Anagrams to great effect in his “Da Vinci Code”. But the another book which read “Va Dinci Cod” interested me more because of its apt usage of anagrams to make funny situations.(But you need to have read Da Vinci Code to get the fun part to full extend).

Like always I tried making anagrams with my name to begin with and then the name of my friends and some of the people I really know. The happiness you get when people crack your anagrams and then say that it was a good is very pleasant. But again nowadays you get many tools and soft wares to design anagrams which take the real challenge away when you see an anagram. Really appreciate those people who make anagrams and with clues in the anagram itself to make it too easy for the pursuer. More appreciation for pursuer who has the wit and patience to get what the creator intended. The url of the blog space is also an anagram.
